After this lesson, you will be able to: Plan an AWS certification path: Cloud Practitioner, Solutions Architect Associate, and what each covers.
AWS certs are well-recognised; some signal real skill and some don't. This lesson maps the path that matters.
AWS Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02): broad survey. $100. 3-5 weeks of study. Good first cert; HR-recognised. AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03): the cert that opens doors. $150. 2-3 months of study. Recognized signal of competence. Specialty / Professional: Solutions Architect Professional, DevOps Engineer Professional, Security Specialty, etc. After 2+ years experience. For most learners: skip Cloud Practitioner if you've done this sub-track; go straight to SAA.
Design resilient architectures (Multi-AZ, backups, replication). Design high-performing architectures (right-size, autoscaling, caching). Design secure architectures (IAM, encryption, network isolation). Design cost-optimised architectures (right tier, reserved instances, spot, lifecycle). Heavy on scenarios: 'You have X workload with Y constraint; pick the best solution from these 4 services.'
Stephane Maarek's Udemy SAA course: the gold standard. $15 on sale. Watch at 1.5x. Adrian Cantrill's SAA course: more depth than Maarek; $40 lifetime. Tutorials Dojo practice exams: $15. THE practice exams everyone uses. If you can pass these, you'll pass the real exam. AWS Skill Builder (free): official AWS labs + courses. Use for hands-on practice. Total cost: ~$200 for course + practice + exam fee. Realistic timeline: 2-3 months part-time.
If you have 2+ years of AWS work experience, certs are mostly redundant. Your work history is the signal. If you're at a non-cloud company and pivoting: certs help. If you're switching specialties (Security Specialty after years as a SWE): yes. Don't chase 5 certs back to back; it's pattern-matched as 'paper engineer'.
Pick the realistic path.
